The Age Requirements:
The eligibility criteria for NMW and NLW rates are based on age:
Care workers must be at least school leaving age to qualify for the NMW.
Individuals aged 23 and over are entitled to the NLW.
Care Workers aged 22 and under receive the NMW, with a higher rate applicable for those aged 21 and over.

21 to 22: £10.18

From April 2024 onwards, the NLW will apply to workers aged 21 and over, with adjusted rates as follows:
21 and over: £11.44 (NLW)
18 to 20: £8.60
Under 18: £6.40

Apprentice Rates:
If you are a care worker apprentices you have specific entitlements based on age and stage of apprenticeship:
Apprentices aged under 19 are entitled to the apprentice rate.
Those aged 19 or over and in their first year of apprenticeship also receive the apprentice rate.
Upon completing the first year of their apprenticeship, individuals aged 19 or over transition to receiving the minimum wage for their age group.
Example Scenarios:
An apprentice aged 21 in their first year of their care work apprenticeship receives a minimum hourly rate of £5.28.
An apprentice aged 21 who has completed the first year of their care apprenticeship is entitled to a minimum hourly rate of £10.18.
